Purpose: To analyse correlation between eccentric fixation(EF) and visual acuity(VA) in different type of amblyopia
Methods: Nineteen amblyopes aged 7~40 years who are undergoing amblyopia treatment or have experienced on it were participated. Comparisons between EF and final VA in all amblyopes and in different type of amblyopes(strabismic and refractive) were made, and also effect of EF was analysed through comparison of initial and final VA.
Results: All amblyopes showed strong negative correlation(r=-0.77, p<0.05) between EF and VA, and both strabismic(r=-0.72, p<0.05) and refractive(r=-0.70, p<0.05) amblyopes also showed strong correlation. Final VA in two groups who underwent amblyopia treatment for at least 6 weeks was improved as 2~3 lines of VA(p<0.05) than initial VA, and the degree of EF also decreased. However, different type of amblyopia did not contribute to change in final EF as difference between two groups in EF was not found. Only refractive amblyopes of two reached normal visual acuity and showed normal fixation pattern.
Conclusions: Regardless of type of amblyopia,EF was a major factor in decrease of VA. Therefore, measurement and investigation of monocular fixation pattern in amblyopia especially, refractive are needed for increase in the rate of amblyopia treatment.
